Learn more about these specialized, high-risk auto policies.
If you have been involved in several major traffic violations in the state of Florida, then you may have to secure specialized, high-risk auto policies to get the coverage that you need. For instance, high-risk drivers in the state of Florida have the option to secure an SR22 or FR44 insurance policy. However, the type of policy you need is dependent on the type of traffic violation you have committed. Here’s what each type of policy will cover.
- SR22
SR22 insurance certificates are required if your license is suspended as a result of a non-alcohol related traffic violation. For instance, you would need to file an SR22 if you have been convicted of driving without a license or insurance, or if your policy has been cancelled due to too many at-fault accidents. SR22 insurance policies offer drivers higher coverage limits than standard auto policies with limits at 10/20/10.
- FR44
FR44 insurance certificates are required if you have been convicted of an alcohol or drug-related traffic violation. The state of Florida introduced FR44 insurance policies because drivers convicted of a DUI or DWI are more likely to repeat their actions and pose a greater risk to others on the road. FR44 insurance has even higher coverage limits than SR22 policies, with minimum requirements at 100/300/50. Because FR44 policies offer more coverage, they have higher premium costs than SR22 insurance.
