What Florida drivers should know about FR44 filings.
If you reside in the state of Florida, then you are subject to special insurance laws in the event that you have been convicted of a DUI. Most notably, drivers who are caught driving while under the influence are legally required to submit an FR44 filing and carry Florida FR44 insurance. But what is an FR44 filing and what does it mean for your car coverage? Here’s what you need to know.
- FR44 Filings
The FR44 filing is designed to ensure that a driver convicted of a DUI is carrying minimum liability coverage limits of $100,000 bodily injury coverage per person; $300,000 bodily injury coverage per accident; and $50,000 property damage coverage per accident. Florida state law requires drivers convicted of a DUI to carry these higher liability limits to protect the public in the event that they cause an auto accident.
Following a DUI, the convicted driver will have their license suspended. In order to get their license reinstated, the driver will have to submit an FR44 filing to the state electronically. This filing acts as proof that the driver has secured a policy with the required higher coverage limits.
- Florida FR44 Insurance
Drivers are required to carry FR44 insurance for three years after their DUI conviction. However, if the driver maintains this coverage without any gaps, then once the three years are up, they will be eligible for standard car coverages once again. It’s important to note that, because FR44 policies offer higher coverage limits, they are more expensive than standard auto policies. Additionally, drivers cannot make monthly payments for their FR44 coverage. Instead, the state of Florida requires that FR44 policies be paid in full, six months at a time. In some cases, insurance providers will offer you the option to make monthly payments when your policy is up for renewal.
